IAE 2026 to Spotlight High-Impact Strategies for Reviving Legacy Oil and Gas Fields
In a strategic session aimed at unlocking Africa’s untapped potential, the Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2026 forum – taking place in Paris from April 22-23, 2026 – will host a high-level panel discussion titled Reviving Legacy Fields for Maximum Recovery. The session is set to explore how revitalizing mature oil and gas fields can sustain long-term domestic production, maximize recoverable reserves and mitigate stranded asset risk.
Africa’s mature fields – many with over a decade of production – still contain substantial untapped reserves. Operators are increasingly leveraging modern enhance oil recovery and improve oil recovery techniques, supported by AI, digital reservoir modeling and integrated gas injection strategies. The session will be well-positioned to highlight practical applications from across the continent.
In Nigeria, AI-driven gas injection in Port Harcourt’s mature reservoirs has optimized recovery rates while lowering operational costs. Ghana’s Tano and Saltpond offshore fields are evaluating CO2 and natural gas injection as technically viable, economically sustainable methods to enhance production. Angola’s Agogo Integrated West Hub Development, operated by energy major TotalEnergies and partners, is set to increase output from aging fields by mid-2026, supported by the country’s Incremental Production Decree to incentivize investment. Meanwhile, in the Republic of Congo, TotalEnergies is investing in the mature Moho Nord field to extend its productive life, with new production expected by 2025.
Panelists will also be positioned to examine asset integrity management and system-based maintenance principles, which are critical for safely and efficiently operating aging infrastructure. Predictive maintenance, IoT-enabled monitoring and digital analytics are helping African operators reduce downtime, lower operational costs and enhance safety while extending the life of existing assets.
The session is also expected to further consider policy frameworks and investment incentives driving revitalization. Examples include Angola’s Incremental Production Decree, Gabon’s 2019 Hydrocarbon Code reforms and Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry Act, all designed to attract capital and stimulate production from mature fields while optimizing economic value.
For investors, the session represents a unique opportunity to understand where technological innovation, regulatory support and operational excellence intersect to extend Africa’s production horizon and secure long-term energy value.
IAE 2026 is an exclusive forum designed to connect African energy markets with global investors, serving as a key platform for deal-making in the lead-up to African Energy Week. Scheduled for April 22-23, 2026, in Paris, the event will provide delegates with two days of in-depth engagement with industry experts, project developers, investors and policymakers.
