IAE 2025: Imperatus Energy Eyes Electricity Trading

Congolese oil and gas trading company Imperatus Energy is looking at electricity trading to complement its existing oil and gas operations in the future. This was revealed by CEO Oumar Semega during a conversation with Géraud Moussarie, Managing Partner at Sustainable Partnerships Ltd., at the Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2025 conference in Paris.

“Trading in electricity is something we are considering,” Semega stated, highlighting the company's ambition to optimize opportunities and expand its international vision.

Imperatus Energy has established itself as a key player in Africa's energy sector, specializing in the supply and export of petroleum products, including LNG, crude oil and derivatives. The company also offers refined product solutions, transportation services and acts as an intermediary between producers and customers. Additionally, it provides essential storage, bunkering, transit and consignment services to ensure efficient and reliable energy distribution across Central Africa.

Semega emphasized the company's commitment to supporting the Congolese government's gas production initiatives and promoting energy sovereignty within the CEMAC region. “As a local player, we support the government in gas production,” he said. “We advocate for the energy sovereignty of the CEMAC region by maximizing the energy value chain and developing partnerships with neighboring countries.”

Building strong relationships with stakeholders is central to Imperatus Energy's strategy. “We have our clients and partners, as well as the regulator,” Semega noted. “We are an alternative for them; our vision is to exist. We are fortunate to have authorities who listen.”

In a competitive sector where major international companies have traditional partners, Imperatus Energy leverages its expertise and local knowledge to differentiate itself. “We rely on our expertise and knowledge of the field,” Semega explained. “This allows us to stand out and offer optimal solutions, developing long-term relationships.”

The Republic of Congo, being a producer and exporter of gas and oil, presents significant opportunities for Imperatus Energy. The company is involved in promoting propane and butane, providing solutions to both the state and private enterprises. “Regarding surpluses, we have outlets across the continent, focusing on intra-African trade to meet their needs,” Semega said.

Imperatus Energy aims to transform Congo into an energy hub for the sub-region. “To assist our partners beyond profitability aspects, we contribute to reducing storage costs and finding alternatives to ensure availability and address shortages,” Semega added.

The company's operations extend to importing gas, diesel, butane, propane, and LNG throughout Southern Africa. With the potential expansion into electricity trading, Imperatus Energy continues to pursue its international vision and optimize opportunities in the energy sector.

“We want to promote local content and replicate everything that works in Africa,” Semega concluded, underscoring the company's commitment to sustainable and inclusive energy development across the continent.
